cricket
In the recent NZ vs SA cricket series, two of the great all-rounders in the modern game were on show: Jacques Kallis and Daniel Vettori. But how do you measure what it means to be a great all-rounder? A simple little formula works well: take the difference between their batting average and their bowling average. One…
READ MOREI was fascinated by this article on cricinfo.com this morning. It reviews a new book by Greg Chappell where he criticises the Indian cricket team for its performance on the recent tour of Australia. In less than a day it has collected 245 comments and 652 ‘likes’ on facebook. I will neither read the former nor do the…
READ MOREHave you ever wondered who are the best hitters of a cricket ball in history? Probably not – but I have… Focusing on test cricket (as it is the truest and purest form of the game) and using cricinfo’s table, which has hitting 30 sixes as the benchmark by which to be noticed, then here is…
READ MORESo I’ve been working on my DMin thesis most of the week. It is on The Role of Intrigue in Communicating with Contemporary Skeptics … which reminds me – for those of you skeptical about the wonders of cricket (particularly the Test match variety), here are a few intriguing happenings in recent days. Can you…
READ MOREThis English cricket team is exceptional. Who could have picked that they would beat the #1 side in the world 4-0 in a four Test series? Remarkable! And as was the case against the Aussies last summer, a number of the victories have been substantial. The rise of English cricket is great for the global…
READ MORENow that I no longer teach a course on movies, my movie-watching has diminished greatly – and often just on planes through sleepy eyes (although I do limit myself to one per flight in order to ensure that I get some reading done!). READ MORELooking down my ‘labels’ to the right, I see that “cricket” is coming last in terms of number. We can’t have that, can we?! With so much cricket on around the world at the moment, here are my (prw) cricket rankings. These rankings come as I stand outside myself and watch who I support as…

the art of unpacking
After a childhood in India, a theological training in the USA and a pastoral ministry in Southland (New Zealand), I spent twenty years in theological education in New Zealand — first at Laidlaw College and then at Carey Baptist College, where I served as principal. In 2009 I began working with Langham Partnership and since 2013 I have been the Programme Director (Langham Preaching). Through it all I've cherished the experience of the 'gracious hand of God upon me' and I've relished the opportunity to 'unpack', or exegete, all that I encounter in my walk through life with Jesus.
