all-rounders

March 29, 2012 /

In the recent NZ vs SA cricket series, two of the great all-rounders in the modern game were on show: Jacques Kallis and Daniel Vettori. But how do you measure what it means to be a great all-rounder? A simple little formula works well: take the difference between their batting average and their bowling average. One…

chappell on culture and leadership

I was fascinated by this article on cricinfo.com this morning. It reviews a new book by Greg Chappell where he criticises the Indian cricket team for its performance on the recent tour of Australia. In less than a day it has collected 245 comments and 652 ‘likes’ on facebook. I will neither read the former nor do the…

hitting sixes

February 1, 2012 /

Have you ever wondered who are the best hitters of a cricket ball in history? Probably not – but I have… Focusing on test cricket (as it is the truest and purest form of the game) and using cricinfo’s table, which has hitting 30 sixes as the benchmark by which to be noticed, then here is…

intriguing cricket intrigue

So I’ve been working on my DMin thesis most of the week. It is on The Role of Intrigue in Communicating with Contemporary Skeptics … which reminds me – for those of you skeptical about the wonders of cricket (particularly the Test match variety), here are a few intriguing happenings in recent days. Can you…

english cricket

This English cricket team is exceptional. Who could have picked that they would beat the #1 side in the world 4-0 in a four Test series? Remarkable! And as was the case against the Aussies last summer, a number of the victories have been substantial. The rise of English cricket is great for the global…

three movies

Now that I no longer teach a course on movies, my movie-watching has diminished greatly – and often just on planes through sleepy eyes (although I do limit myself to one per flight in order to ensure that I get some reading done!). But not in the last ten days. There have been three movies…

the cup doth not runneth over – yet

You’d think that this child of India would be ecstatic about India winning the cricket World Cup. [The only other time they won it was the only time I didn’t follow it, immersed as I was in theological study in Chicago – a long way from cricket and a long time before the internet…] No…

In God’s grace and sovereignty I find myself on an extended visit to India at just the same time as the New Zealand cricket team is in India. Like I say, it is all God’s sovereignty and none of my responsibility… Captaining the New Zealand team here in India is one Daniel Vettori. Now I…

I feel sad today, really sad. As if being a country where foreign forces fight a war on your own soil is not enough… As if having the worst air disaster ever to occur in your history is not enough (and having it happen in sight of your country’s capital)… As if being ravaged by…

prw cricket rankings

January 13, 2010 /

Looking down my ‘labels’ to the right, I see that “cricket” is coming last in terms of number. We can’t have that, can we?! With so much cricket on around the world at the moment, here are my (prw) cricket rankings. These rankings come as I stand outside myself and watch who I support as…

the art of unpacking

After a childhood in India, a theological training in the USA and a pastoral ministry in Southland (New Zealand), I spent twenty years in theological education in New Zealand — first at Laidlaw College and then at Carey Baptist College, where I served as principal. In 2009 I began working with Langham Partnership and since 2013 I have been the Programme Director (Langham Preaching). Through it all I've cherished the experience of the 'gracious hand of God upon me' and I've relished the opportunity to 'unpack', or exegete, all that I encounter in my walk through life with Jesus.
